The Gabba, people and places - 1999

The Woolloongabba web site was developed as part of a Cultural Mapping Project.

Woolloongabba, commonly known as The Gabba, is an inner city suburb of Brisbane. Before European occupation, the area was characterised by a creek running along the low-lying land creating a series of lush pools and swamps.

Later it became known because of the large steam train depot which became the Sunmap and Dental hospital site. All the while the Gabba and cricket were linked - an association established at the Gabba cricket ground. Today that famous ground is also home of the mighty Brisbane Lions football team.

The Russian community established themselves early in the area and three Russian Orthodox churches remain to call back the faithful. Other nationalities have also settled, creating a suburb of cultural diversity.
